Heart
When trust has been broken, what does rebuilding it actually ask of you?
Why this question matters
Broken trust rarely announces itself afterwards. It shows up as a slightly shorter conversation, a question you decide not to ask, a plan you keep to yourself in case it falls through.
Caution is not a character flaw. It is often the thing that kept you standing. The honest question is whether it is still doing the job it was hired for.
You may be carrying
- A relationship that ended in a way you never fully explained to anyone
- A friendship or family tie that changed and never changed back
- The habit of checking, twice, before you believe something good
- Tiredness that has nothing to do with sleep
Consider this
- Name one thing you used to do easily that you now do carefully.
- Consider whether your caution is protecting you from harm, or from being known.
- Think of someone who has kept their word to you. What made that believable?
A question to sit with
If trust were rebuilt slowly rather than all at once, what would the first small step look like for you?
Scripture & reflection
The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.
Nearness is offered before repair is finished. You are not required to be whole before you are accompanied.
What others may be carrying
The same situation is lived differently by different people. In one conversation you might be sitting with:
- Someone who was the one who broke the trust, and has never said so out loud
- Someone whose trust was broken by a church rather than a partner
- Someone who trusts easily and has been told they should not
