Real Life
When life does not look like you expected, how do you begin again?
Why this question matters
Starting over is usually described as brave. From the inside it is mostly admin, tiredness and small decisions made without anyone to consult.
There is also a loss inside it: the version of life you had already imagined, and had been planning around.
You may be carrying
- A home, a city or a church you did not choose to leave
- Paperwork that keeps the past in the present
- The exhaustion of explaining your situation to people
- Relief you feel slightly guilty about
Consider this
- Allow the plan you lost to be grieved, even if what replaced it is better.
- Choose one thing in the new season that is genuinely yours.
- Notice who has stayed. Say thank you.
A question to sit with
What from the old season are you carrying because it is valuable, and what because you have not put it down yet?
What others may be carrying
The same situation is lived differently by different people. In one conversation you might be sitting with:
- Someone who started over years ago and still feels newly arrived
- Someone whose starting over was a bereavement
- Someone who chose the change and still finds it hard
